Biogas is a renewable energy source produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter. This sustainable energy alternative is gaining popularity due to its environmental benefits and potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

What is Biogas?

Biogas primarily consists of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), with trace amounts of other gases. It is generated through the breakdown of organic materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste, and food waste.

How Biogas is Produced

Anaerobic Digestion Process

  • Organic waste materials are collected and transported to a biogas plant.
  • The feedstock is prepared by shredding and mixing to create a uniform slurry.
  • The slurry is placed in a sealed, oxygen-free digester where microorganisms break down the organic matter, producing biogas.
  • The produced biogas is collected from the top of the digester and can be purified if necessary.
  • The remaining material, known as digestate, can be used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer.
